Originally formed in 2007, the PhazyLuckers started life at the AMR, Geneva, before stepping out of the confines of the workshop structure to embrace their shared love of classic and indie US/UK rock and guitar pop in the guise of their own band. The arrival of Roxane in 2008 has opened rich creative possibilities, with her emotion-filled lyrics of life and love, her soulful and powerful voice melding perfectly with the melodic guitar riffs and forceful rhythm section of the band, inspiring the PhazyLuckers to write their own compositions and move away from their cover band beginnings.
In March 2009 the band released their first EP « The Grange Canal Sessions » featuring new compositions « Flow As It Goes » and « In Your Bed », together with 2 bonus tracks (covers I’m Only Happy When It Rains and Personal Jesus). Illustrating perfectly the PhazyLuckers style, « Flow As It Goes » mixes Roxane’s bittersweet words with pure guitar-driven pop. « In Your Bed » finds the band in rockier territory, with darker, edgy guitar riffs laid over an intriguing bassline that drives the song from start to finish, setting the scene for Roxane’s soulful vocals.
The diverse musical backgrounds, experiences, and nationalities (Swiss, French and English) of the band members contribute greatly to the PhazyLuckers sound: David’s vast musical knowledge through study of classical, jazz, blues and rock styles, together with his multi-instrument talents (bass, guitar, keyboards, vocals); Adrian’s musical journey through late-70’s post punk to 90’s Britrock in bands in the UK; Math’s love of anything loud and energetic (though he likes more subtle stuff, too); Roxane’s formative years spent listening to Led Zeppelin, The Doors and Janis Joplin when she should have been doing her homework.
A change in line-up is never an easy moment for a band, and the Phazyluckers were no different when, in early 2010, the band and founder member Olivier decided to part ways. Happily, new recruit Math (drums) brings talent and a firm commitment to the “Phazy” sound, attributes which are already making a strong impact on the new material which is currently in development.
The new incarnation of the Phazyluckers has ambitious plans for 2010 and are planning various live dates in the Geneva region this summer, as well as continuing to write new material for their first album scheduled for late 2010.
